Hex Head Bolts and Hex Head Setscrews
— NAB and SAB

Hex head setscrews are the fully threaded form — "hexagon head screws" to ISO 4017 in DEF STAN 02-862 Table 8. Bolts are the part-threaded form to ISO 4014.

Overview

Hex head bolts and hex head setscrews machined to order to the dimensional requirements of ISO 4014 / ISO 4017, or BS 3692 where specified, in nickel aluminium bronze (CuAl10Ni5Fe4 — CW307G / CA104) and aluminium silicon bronze (CuAl6Si2Fe — CW301G / CA107) to the applicable drawing or material specification. M4 to M64 metric; 1/4" upward in UNC and UNF. Fully threaded (ISO 4017, legacy DIN 933) or partially threaded with a plain shank (ISO 4014, legacy DIN 931). Supplied with material certification and, where specified, to the naval material and fastener standards — NES 833 / DEF STAN 02-833 for NAB, NES 834 / DEF STAN 02-834 Pt 2 (superseded by 02-879 Pt 2 Annex D, Sept 2011) for SAB, and the DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 manufacturing route.

Bolts and setscrews are machined from certified bar with machined thread forms. Machining from bar is one of the manufacturing routes permitted by DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 for NAB and SAB; the Defence Standard requires machined thread forms for these alloys. No minimum order quantity.

Also known as: hex bolt, hex head bolt, hexagon bolt, hex setscrew, set screw, hex cap screw, full thread bolt, NAB bolt, aluminium bronze bolt, AlSiBr bolt, BS 3692 bolt.
Dimensions

ISO 4014 / ISO 4017 basic dimensions

Nominal values. ISO 4014 bolts and ISO 4017 screws share the same nominal hex-head dimensions. The principal difference is that ISO 4014 is a partially threaded bolt with a plain shank, whereas ISO 4017 is a fully threaded screw. Both standards' own material scope is primarily steel and stainless steel; DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 calls up their dimensions for non-ferrous naval fasteners, and we manufacture NAB and SAB to those dimensions.

ISO 4014 thread length b (l = nominal length): 2d + 6 mm for l ≤ 125 mm; 2d + 12 mm for 125 < l ≤ 200 mm; 2d + 25 mm for l > 200 mm. ISO 4017 is fully threaded, subject to the underhead thread runout provisions of the standard.
Across-flats note: legacy DIN 931 / DIN 933 and current BS 3692:2014 use 17, 19, 22 and 32 mm across flats at M10, M12, M14 and M22 respectively; ISO 4014 / ISO 4017 use 16, 18, 21 and 34 mm. BS 3692 also has its own tolerance tables. If the drawing specifies DIN or BS 3692 rather than ISO, manufacture follows that standard in full — say so on the enquiry, particularly where the bolt must fit existing spanners or recesses.
Naval thread note: the table shows standard ISO coarse pitches. Where DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 applies, its thread requirements govern: metric coarse pitch through M27, 3 mm pitch for M30–M39 and 4 mm pitch for M42–M48; external threads 6g, unless the contract or component drawing specifies otherwise.

Product grade A or B per the standard; specials, non-standard lengths, reduced or oversize heads, drilled heads and imperial threads to drawing — see Made to Drawing.

Materials

Materials

DEF STAN 02-833 / NES 833 — Nickel Aluminium Bronze (CW307G / CA104)

CuAl10Ni5Fe4. The higher-strength alloy, with excellent seawater, erosion and cavitation resistance; commonly specified for structural and immersed fastenings. Naval material standard NES 833 / DEF STAN 02-833 Part 2. Relative magnetic permeability typically around 1.4–1.5. Full data, designations and cross-references on the NAB material page.

NES 834 / DEF STAN 02-834 → 02-879 Pt 2 Annex D — Aluminium Silicon Bronze (CW301G / CA107)

CuAl6Si2Fe. Good machinability, ductile, and formulated for controlled low magnetic permeability — relative magnetic permeability not exceeding 1.05 (DEF STAN 02-879 Part 2 Annex D, D.2.8; batch-tested to D.4.5) — used for mine countermeasures vessels and other naval low-signature applications. Tighter permeability limits are a drawing or contract requirement and are handled at enquiry stage. Naval material standard NES 834 / DEF STAN 02-834 Part 2, subsequently incorporated into DEF STAN 02-879 Part 2 Annex D. Full data on the SAB material page.

Certification

Source-material certification supplied as standard, with traceability to the bar heat maintained through manufacture. Where the drawing calls for DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2, bolts and setscrews are machined from bar with machined threads and post-machining stress relief per clause 8.2.4 (NAB) or 8.2.5 (SAB), with heat treatment and stress relief records supplied where required by the drawing, specification or purchase order. Marking, EN 10204 3.1 certification, dimensional inspection reports and CoC as required by the order; EN 10204 3.2 where agreed in advance and supported by the material source and inspection arrangements.

The drawing and specification govern. Alloy designations above are cross-references, not statements of equivalence.

FAQ

Hex Bolts & Setscrews — Common Questions

What's the difference between ISO 4014 and ISO 4017? +
Same nominal head geometry. ISO 4014 is a partially threaded bolt with a plain shank and a thread length set by the formula above (legacy DIN 931). ISO 4017 is a fully threaded screw (legacy DIN 933). Full thread is more common for shorter lengths; part thread where the shank bears in a clearance hole.
My drawing says DIN 933. Is that the same as ISO 4017? +
Close but not identical. DIN 933 is withdrawn and ISO 4017 is its successor. One important dimensional difference is the across-flats at M10, M12, M14 and M22 — a DIN 933 M12 has a 19 mm head and an ISO 4017 M12 has 18 mm. Tell us which the drawing specifies and we'll make to it.
Can you supply BS 3692 bolts in bronze? +
Yes. BS 3692:2014 states that its dimensional requirements apply to non-ferrous bolts, screws and nuts as well as steel. Its steel property classes don't apply to bronze; material is certified to the alloy specification on the drawing.
Do you supply matching nuts and washers? +
Yes, in the specified alloy, with traceable material certification for each material batch. See Hex Nuts and Washers, or send the set on one enquiry.
Are threads rolled or cut? +
Machined. DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 requires machined thread forms for these alloys, and machined threads are our standard route for NAB and SAB whether or not 02-862 is called up.
What's the largest you can make? +
The dimensional range on this page runs to M64; larger and non-standard sizes are subject to drawing, bar availability and manufacturing review. Imperial from 1/4".
How quickly can you quote? +
Within 24 hours of receiving the drawing or list, usually faster.
