NES 833 — Naval Engineering Standard 833 — is a Royal Navy specification covering wrought NAB forgings, forging stock, rods and sections used in naval vessels. It is a material standard, defining chemical composition, mechanical properties and heat treatment for that material; finished fasteners made from it are covered separately by DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2.
Originally written for Royal Navy use, NES 833 is still referenced on legacy surface ship drawings and refit programmes, including Portsmouth-based naval refit programmes. While DEF STAN 02-833 is the MOD Defence Standard, drawings produced before the transition still call up NES 833.
For procurement engineers working on surface ship refit and maintenance, NES 833 is the spec they'll encounter most frequently. When a drawing calls it out, the fasteners must be sourced to that standard and supplied with the corresponding certification.

Mill certificate showing chemical composition and mechanical properties to the specification ordered, supplied as standard.
Time-temperature records supplied where heat treatment is specified. Material heat treatment to control microstructure is governed by the material standard (DEF STAN 02-833 for NAB; DEF STAN 02-834 Pt 2, superseded by 02-879 Pt 2 Annex D in Sept 2011, for SAB). DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 Para 8.2.4 (NAB) / 8.2.5 (SAB) defines the manufacturing and post-machining route for finished non-First Level fasteners, including stress relief where required. We supply to whichever the drawing calls up. DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 covers Non-First Level fasteners; Part 3 covers First Level.
