NES 834 — Naval Engineering Standard 834 — is the Royal Navy material standard for silicon aluminium bronze (SAB). It is the SAB equivalent of NES 833, which covers nickel aluminium bronze (NAB). Where your drawing calls out NES 834, the specified material is silicon aluminium bronze, not NAB.
Heat treatment for NES 834 SAB is specified under DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 Para 8.2.5. This defines the temperature ranges, hold times, and cooling rates required to achieve the correct microstructure and mechanical properties in SAB components. All material supplied with time-temperature records to this standard where heat treatment is required.
SAB offers excellent machinability alongside good corrosion resistance in seawater — making it the preferred choice where tight tolerances or complex fastener geometries are required. It is non-magnetic and well-suited to high-load bolted connections in marine and offshore applications.
