Overview

Hexagon nuts machined to order to the dimensional requirements of ISO 4032 (regular, style 1), ISO 4035 (thin) or BS 3692 where specified, in nickel aluminium bronze (CuAl10Ni5Fe4 — CW307G / CA104) and aluminium silicon bronze (CuAl6Si2Fe — CW301G / CA107) to the applicable drawing or material specification. M4 to M64 metric; 1/4" upward in UNC and UNF. Supplied with material certification and, where specified, to NES 833 / DEF STAN 02-833 for NAB, NES 834 / DEF STAN 02-834 Pt 2 (superseded by 02-879 Pt 2 Annex D, Sept 2011) for SAB, and the DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 manufacturing route.

Nuts are machined from certified hexagon or round bar with machined threads — the route DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 permits for these alloys; the standard requires machined thread forms. Usually ordered with the matching bolts or studs, but supplied separately against drawing just as readily. No minimum order quantity.

Also known as: hex nut, hexagon nut, full nut, ISO 4032 nut, DIN 934 nut, half nut, thin nut, lock nut, jam nut, nyloc nut, nylon-insert nut, all-metal locking nut, NAB nut, aluminium bronze nut, AlSiBr nut.
Dimensions

ISO 4032 regular nuts and ISO 4035 thin nuts — basic dimensions

ISO 4032 is the regular hexagon nut, style 1; ISO 4035 the thin (half) nut, style 0. Across flats is common to both. Across flats and nut heights are the maximum values (s max, m max) from the standards. In ISO 4032 the main table runs M5–M39; M4 and sizes above M39 are covered by its Annex A.

Across-flats note: legacy DIN 934 and current BS 3692:2014 use 17, 19, 22 and 32 mm across flats at M10, M12, M14 and M22; ISO 4032 uses 16, 18, 21 and 34 mm. DIN 934 nuts are 0.8d high, so they are lower than ISO 4032 at every size from M5 to M39 (an M12 DIN 934 is 10 mm, an ISO 4032 is 10.8 mm); the two coincide at M4 and from M42 upward. If the drawing specifies DIN or BS 3692 rather than ISO, manufacture follows that standard in full — say so on the enquiry, particularly where nuts must match existing bolts or spanners.
Other forms: high (thick) nuts to ISO 4033 (style 2, M5–M36); prevailing-torque nuts — nylon-insert (Nyloc-type) to ISO 7040 (regular), ISO 10512 (fine pitch) or ISO 10511 (thin); all-metal to ISO 7042 (style 2), ISO 7719 (style 1) or ISO 10513 (fine pitch), within each standard's own size range — other sizes to drawing and qualification review; castle and slotted nuts, dome nuts, wing nuts and flanged nuts to drawing. Nylon-insert high nuts to ISO 7041. The prevailing-torque standards are steel standards whose torque performance is defined for steel property classes via ISO 2320; in bronze they are dimensional references only, and any prevailing-torque acceptance test must be agreed on the order. Non-metallic inserts are not suitable for every naval application; where a locking nut is called up on a defence drawing we'll confirm the form and the locking element with you before quoting.
Naval thread note: the table shows standard ISO coarse pitches. Where DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 applies, its thread requirements govern: metric coarse pitch through M27, 3 mm pitch for M30–M39 and 4 mm pitch for M42–M48, nut threads 6H, unless the contract or component drawing specifies otherwise.

Dimensional product grade A or B where applicable; bronze material and mechanical requirements are governed separately by the drawing and material specification. Non-standard heights, reduced or oversize across-flats, left-hand threads, imperial and specials to drawing — see Made to Drawing.

Materials

Materials

DEF STAN 02-833 / NES 833 — Nickel Aluminium Bronze (CW307G / CA104)

CuAl10Ni5Fe4. The higher-strength alloy, with excellent seawater, erosion and cavitation resistance; commonly specified for structural and immersed fastenings. Naval material standard NES 833 / DEF STAN 02-833 Part 2. Relative magnetic permeability typically around 1.4–1.5. Full data, designations and cross-references on the NAB material page.

NES 834 / DEF STAN 02-834 → 02-879 Pt 2 Annex D — Aluminium Silicon Bronze (CW301G / CA107)

CuAl6Si2Fe. Good machinability, ductile, and formulated for controlled low magnetic permeability — relative magnetic permeability not exceeding 1.05 (DEF STAN 02-879 Part 2 Annex D, D.2.8; batch-tested to D.4.5) — used for mine countermeasures vessels and other naval low-signature applications. Tighter permeability limits are a drawing or contract requirement and are handled at enquiry stage. Naval material standard NES 834 / DEF STAN 02-834 Part 2, subsequently incorporated into DEF STAN 02-879 Part 2 Annex D. Full data on the SAB material page.

Certification

Source-material certification supplied as standard, with traceability to the bar heat maintained through manufacture. Where the drawing calls for DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2, nuts are machined from bar with machined threads and post-machining stress relief per clause 8.2.4 (NAB) or 8.2.5 (SAB), with heat treatment and stress relief records supplied where required by the drawing, specification or purchase order. Marking, EN 10204 3.1 certification, dimensional inspection reports and CoC as required by the order; EN 10204 3.2 where agreed in advance and supported by the material source and inspection arrangements.

The drawing and specification govern. Alloy designations above are cross-references, not statements of equivalence.

FAQ

Hex Nuts — Common Questions

Is a DIN 934 nut the same as an ISO 4032 nut? +
Close but not identical. DIN 934 is withdrawn and ISO 4032 is its successor. Across-flats differ at M10, M12, M14 and M22, and nut heights differ at several sizes. A DIN 934 M12 nut is 19 mm across flats; an ISO 4032 M12 is 18 mm. Tell us which the drawing specifies.
What's the difference between a full nut, a half nut and a lock nut? +
A full (regular) nut is ISO 4032 style 1. A half or thin nut is ISO 4035, roughly half the height, used as a jam nut or where space is limited. "Lock nut" is used loosely for both thin nuts and prevailing-torque nuts; the drawing will say which, and if it doesn't we'll ask.
Can you supply nylon-insert (Nyloc-type) nuts in NAB or SAB? +
Yes, subject to the application. The nylon insert is a different material with its own temperature and environment limits, and some naval drawings call for all-metal prevailing-torque nuts instead. We'll confirm the locking form and its suitability with you before quoting.
Do the nuts come from the same bar heat as the bolts? +
Not necessarily — nuts and bolts are often machined from different bar sizes. Each is certified to its own material batch, and both are traceable. If you need matched heats across a set, say so on the enquiry.
Are threads rolled or cut? +
Machined. DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 requires machined thread forms for these alloys, and machined threads are our standard route for NAB and SAB whether or not 02-862 is called up.
Can you supply BS 3692 nuts in bronze? +
Yes. BS 3692:2014's dimensional requirements apply to non-ferrous nuts as well as steel; material is certified to the alloy specification on the drawing.
How quickly can you quote? +
Within 24 hours of receiving the drawing or list, usually faster.
