What Your Drawing Might Call It

Nickel aluminium bronze appears on drawings under several national and defence designations. They describe closely related alloys, but they are not specification-equivalent: composition limits, mechanical requirements, inspection and heat treatment differ between them. Material is supplied to the exact specification, part and issue stated on the drawing or purchase order.

DesignationSystemNotes
CuAl10Ni5Fe4ISO / EN symbolNominal composition
CW307GBS EN 12163 / 12165 / 12167 / 12420 (2024 editions)European material designation used for rod, bar, profile, forging stock and forgings under the applicable EN product standard
CA104BS 2874 (withdrawn)Legacy BS wrought NAB designation; commonly cross-referenced to CW307G. Still common on UK and naval drawings
NES 833Royal NavyLegacy naval material standard for wrought NAB
DEF STAN 02-833 Part 2UK MODDefence Standard for NAB forgings, forging stock, rods and sections; superseded NES 833 Part 2 and DGS 1043. Adds requirements beyond the EN alloy (chemistry, testing, size-dependent heat treatment)
C63000 / C63200ASTM B150/B150M / UNSUS wrought NAB grades. Broadly comparable to CW307G / CA104 but with different composition limits; not specification-equivalent
C95800ASTM B148 / UNSUS cast NAB — see note below
AB2BS 1400 (withdrawn, replaced by BS EN 1982)Legacy UK cast NAB grade; cross-referenced in the EN system as CC333G (CuAl10Fe5Ni5-C) and commonly compared with ASTM C95500. C95800 is another marine cast NAB grade but is not specification-equivalent to AB2
2.0966Werkstoff-Nr.Legacy German material number for CuAl10Ni5Fe4 (former DIN 17665 / 17672)
Note on C95800 and AB2: these are casting grades. If either is specified for a fastener that will be machined from wrought stock, we will query the requirement before manufacture. Any substitution to a wrought grade such as CW307G or C63000 is a material substitution requiring customer or design-authority approval, and the certificate will identify the material actually supplied.

Mechanical properties — BS EN 12163:2024 rod, by delivery condition

EN 12163 specifies tensile properties (R conditions) and hardness (H conditions) as alternatives. A bar is ordered to one or the other.

Density approximately 7.6 g/cm³.

These are the published room-temperature limits for the alloy under BS EN 12163:2024. DEF STAN 02-833 imposes its own chemistry, testing and heat treatment requirements, which are not reproduced here. Where the drawing calls for NES 833, DEF STAN 02-833 or another specification, material is sourced and certified to that specification and the mill certificate shows the actual values.

Specifications

Material Standard and Manufacturing Route

Where called up by the drawing or contract, two Defence Standards may apply to a naval NAB fastener, and they cover different requirements.

DEF STAN 02-833 Part 2 — the material.

Covers NAB forgings, forging stock, rods and sections. Governs chemistry, mechanical testing and, where applicable, heat treatment of the feedstock to control microstructure — the phases associated with selective phase corrosion in seawater. Superseded NES 833 Part 2, which still appears on legacy drawings.

DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2 — the naval fastener manufacturing and certification route.

Covers procurement of Non-First Level naval fasteners (Part 3 covers First Level). Clause 8.2.4 defines the manufacturing and subsequent treatment requirements for NAB fasteners: stress relief for machined studs, studbolts, nuts, bolts and screws; a separate heat treatment route for hot-headed bolts and screws; and no further heat treatment for washers. The standard also calls up dimensional standards for common fastener forms.

What we do:

Treatment parameters belong to the specifications and are not reproduced here.

Why NAB

Why Nickel Aluminium Bronze for Fasteners?

NAB suits seawater fastenings for these reasons.

Seawater Corrosion Resistance

NAB provides very good resistance to seawater corrosion when the alloy, microstructure and manufacturing condition are correctly controlled. As with other marine alloys, localised, crevice, galvanic and selective-phase corrosion can occur under adverse conditions, which is why the naval specifications control microstructure and heat treatment.

Magnetic Permeability

Relative magnetic permeability typically around 1.4–1.5 — lower than steel, but not a low-signature material. Where a permeability limit applies, specify SAB.

High Strength

EN 12163 R680 and R740 conditions (Rm ≥ 680 / ≥ 740 MPa). NAB combines corrosion resistance with the mechanical strength needed for high-load fastener applications in naval structures.

Applications

Where NAB Fasteners Are Used

NAB fasteners are specified wherever seawater corrosion, biofouling, or magnetic signature are a concern.

Defence & Naval

The naval fastener material under DEF STAN 02-833 Part 2 and, before it, NES 833. Supplied into Portsmouth-based naval refit programmes.

FAQ

Nickel Aluminium Bronze Fasteners — Common Questions

Is CW307G the same as CA104? +
CA104 is the legacy BS 2874 designation and CW307G the current BS EN 12163 number for CuAl10Ni5Fe4. They are conventionally cross-referenced and describe the same alloy family. They are not the same specification, so a certificate is issued to whichever the order calls for.
My drawing says C95800. Can you supply that as a bolt? +
C95800 is a casting grade. A wrought grade such as CW307G may be technically appropriate for a machined fastener, but supplying it against a C95800 drawing is a material substitution that needs your or your design authority's approval. We'll raise it before quoting, and the certificate will identify the material actually supplied.
Do you supply to NES 833 / DEF STAN 02-833? +
Yes. NES 833 appears on legacy naval drawings and was succeeded by DEF STAN 02-833. We supply to the specification, part and issue stated on the drawing or purchase order; the two are not assumed interchangeable for certification. Where the fastener is also called up to DEF STAN 02-862 Part 2, we manufacture to that route.
Is nickel aluminium bronze non-magnetic? +
No. Relative magnetic permeability for CW307G / DEF STAN 02-833-type material is typically around 1.4–1.5 — much lower than carbon and low-alloy steels, but not a controlled low-permeability alloy. Where a permeability limit applies, the material is normally aluminium silicon bronze (DEF STAN 02-834 Pt 2, superseded by 02-879 Pt 2 Annex D in Sept 2011), with relative magnetic permeability not exceeding 1.05 (DEF STAN 02-879 Part 2 Annex D, D.2.8; batch-tested to D.4.5). Tighter permeability limits are a drawing or contract requirement and are handled at enquiry stage. If your application specifies a permeability limit, state it on the enquiry so the test and certification can be agreed.
What's the difference between NAB and SAB? +
NAB (CuAl10Ni5Fe4 / CW307G family; NES 833 / DEF STAN 02-833) typically offers higher strength with excellent seawater, erosion and cavitation resistance, and is the usual choice for structural and immersed fastenings. SAB (CuAl6Si2Fe / CW301G family; legacy NES 834 / DEF STAN 02-834, subsequently incorporated into DEF STAN 02-879 Part 2 Annex D) contains much less iron, machines more easily, and is formulated for controlled low magnetic permeability. The drawing and specification govern which is supplied.
Do you keep NAB fasteners in stock? +
No. Orders are manufactured from identified certified material to the drawing or standard, subject to bar availability and manufacturing capability, with heat and batch traceability maintained through manufacture where required by the applicable drawing or specification. Lead time is quoted per order.
Metric or imperial? +
Both. UNC and UNF are common on legacy naval equipment and US-origin machinery; BSW and BSF on older UK drawings. Say which on the enquiry.
